Enter the Wonderful World of Design
This book introduces the fascinating world of design to children. From smartphones to chatbots, everything around us is designed by someone for a specific purpose. This book is an eye-opener for young minds interested in design and helps them understand what design is and what it isn't.
Written by a team of practicing designers and teachers, this book shares stories of designs and designers that have contributed to making the world a better place. It helps children think creatively and critically about designing anything, making it the perfect first book for children interested in design.
What makes this book unique is that it's written by both adults and children during the pandemic, and every page has a design story based on things that surround us. It took three years to curate, select, and craft the stories that children can appreciate.
Design is too important to be left only to adults, and this book is an excellent way to introduce children to design in a holistic and responsible way. We often associate the word 'design' loosely with colors, prints, or cool stuff, but none of these are design. Design is about creating things that are useful to people and do not harm our planet. With a complete understanding of what design is and what it is not, children can have a critical and constructive view of designing anything.
Writing
The book is written by keeping kids as the primary readers. Content is created with less text & more visuals by keeping the short attention span of kids in mind. We chose real-life examples over the theoretical design approach to make the relatability of the design.
Book Design
The book is designed with minimal yet playful content. We also wanted to convey the message 'design is not decoration' through not just the content but also through the book design. We created a character called 'Mil' to narrate the stories with the right emotional tone.
Photography
We aimed to bring lots of visual content to make the stories more relatable. Rather than going for stock images, we chose to conduct extensive photoshoots of various objects & scenarios to get the most appropriate visuals without any compromise.
Branding
1 Million was symbolized by creating a small cutout in the letter M. This resonates with our mission of creating 1 Million young designers to shape a better world together. We are aiming for many more initiatives under the umbrella of '1 Million Designers'.
Video Production
We did an in-house video shoot & post production to document the journey & create a powerful message about our mission. Authenticity was the primary element while doing the video shoot. We achieved it through candid messages from the children who actively reviewed & co-created the book.
Collaboration
Collaboration was one of the key aspects of our process. We collaborated with designers, illustrators, creative writers & children to set the right tone for the book. Diversity achieved by collaboration is reflected in every page of this book.
